About Project

Designed for Silver-level certification from the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED program

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs selected co-developers Chesterfield and Graham & Company to construct a 3-story, 65,000 sqft VA medical clinic and 8-story parking garage with 2,400 spaces on a 4 acre site located in downtown Birmingham, Alabama. The new facility houses the Veteran Affairs Primary Care Annex, which was previously located inside the hospital. You can find the Primary Care Annex within 1-mile of the existing Veteran Affairs Hospital and Medical Center, which spans the entire city block.

In addition to providing medical-related services to VAs, such as imaging, mental health, pharmaceuticals, and medical personnel offices, the Primary Care Annex also features a “healing garden” that sits between the parking deck and the clinic. The construction team worked closely with local veterans to incorporate elements that would benefit them, such as preferred parking spots for disabled veterans and easily accessed entrances for those using wheelchairs and walkers. The 8-level parking deck, made of precast concrete, shades the garden and can be accessed at various points on the sloping site.

Co-developers Chesterfield and Graham & Company completed the build in Q4 2015 in December, and the inauguration was held in January 2016 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. It adheres to the high standards set by the United States’ Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design Program and was designed to meet LEED Silver-level Certification qualifications.
